Welcome..

The Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), is a non-profit making professional association geared towards the promotion of Science, Technology and Mathematics (STM) teacher effectiveness in Nigeria. Other goals of the association include creating for a for exchange of ideas among members through workshops, seminars, conferences, excursions, quiz and project competitions at National, State, Zonal and subject panel levels. STAN is organized into 36 state branches and the F.C.T. Abuja. Each branch organizes its own activities to suit local needs. The Association also has 15 subject panels namely: Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Education, Information Communications Technology, Gender and STME, Physical and Health Education, Home Economics, Integrated Science, Mathematics, Physics, Primary Science, Science, Technology & Society, Teacher Education and Technology Education. Each year, national workshops which rotates the various states of the federation are organized by all the subject panels.

STAN Anambra State was formed in 1959, two years after the National Association was formed in Lagos (1957). Then Anambra State (in East Central State, E.C.S), was part and parcel of Eastern Region together with South Eastern State and Rivers State, all of which came into effect following state creation in 1967. Again, in 1976 E.C.S. was split further into Anambra (old) and Imo State, while the 1991 state creation gave rise to the present Anambra and Enugu States from the old Anambra State. STAN secretariat in the state has well been changing hands following each state creation exercise.

The branch Association was formed by dedicated and committed science teachers who were teaching in secondary schools in and around Onitsha. Notable among them then were Late Messers L.O. Ndu, Isaiah O. Ikeobi, F.O.C. Ndu, J.U. Izuorah, S.N. Akudinobi, E.U. Akusoba, Omeje and H.U.U.Okonkwo. The primary activities of STAN in those days were limited to creation of awareness about science teaching and attendance to Annual National Conference since there was paucity of science teachers in schools.

Other problems that militated the progress of STAN in those days include;
  • Low morale of STM teachers often attributed to non-payment of STM allowance to them by government
  • Dwindling and low economic disposition of teachers which militate their attendance and participation in National, State or Zonal workshops, Seminars and Conference
  • Non-cooperation of most school heads in sponsoring their STM teachers to these staff development activities of STAN.

The period 1967-1970, witnessed suspension in the activities of STAN in the region because of the civil war. However, in August 1970, some of the state branch members rejoined the rest of the other members from the rest of Nigeria at STAN Annual Conference in Kano. Because of the vibrancy of the state team at National Conferences, the state hosted the National Conference in August 1974.

By the year 1990, a member of the state executive Prof. E.O Akuezuilo was elected the National Curriculum Development Co-ordinator. In 2000, Anambra State hosted the Annual National Conference at Awka. Again, between 2002 & 2004, an indigene of the state, Prof. E.A.C. Okeke served as the National president of STAN while the 2007 / 2008, the National Vice-President in the person of Mr. M.C. Ezeuchu also came from the state. A number of other Notable personalities in STAN who have distinguished themselves in the field of STM and served creditably well at National levels in the Association and beyond came from the state / region. Some of them include Professors, O.C. Nwana, G.O. Obioma, M.A.Maduabum, UcheNzewi, B.G.Nworgu, D.N.Eze and Dr. Zeph. Njoku. The list is endless.

The state has indeed recorded significant input at National level, be it as leadership, subject panels or performance at annual STAN / MOBIL Quiz, Project Competitions, first to start branch conference,first to have branch online Journal as well as State website. The branch website anchors list of members online, registration of branch members online, our Journal, State activities, branch Book of Readings.
